Homework

The classic thing that I always think of when it comes to homework is spelling. There was always writing the words five times each and than all the pages in the spelling book that needed to be completed. Why can't spelling homework consist of sentences. This will get the students to work on their grammar plus they can also be creative, in fact if you make the homework assignment for spelling class, creative sentences using your spelling words, the students will more than likely have a better time doing that than just copying the word five times each. For things like math why does homework always have to be from the textbook or workbook? In most cases all those problems even the word problems are unrealistic situations and after a while that becomes boring. Instead of having the students find all the geometric shapes on a piece of paper why can't they look around their house's and find the geometric shapes. This will be helpful for the kinesthetic learners because they can actually see and touch the shape of the object everyday in order to help them remember what it is.
Homework is important it will reinforce the lesson that was covered during class on that particular day. Also when it comes to homework teachers have to realize that there are different things that are appropriate for first graders and eighth graders and that they cannot spend the same amount of time at home after school doing homework. I think that the key concept to remember when it comes to homework is that it is not meant to keep kids up all night it is meant to basically to close the students information on that particular topic for the day. I also think that homework is important to let parents know what is going on in their child's academic life. One thing that I would like to do when I become a teacher is to give out a piece of paper that has all the homework listed for the week on it, that way if the students finish their homework early they can go ahead if they want. Homework is necessary and it is impossible to avoid. However, if you approach it with positive attitudes and make it something that students don't dread doing they will have a much better view on homework. And, although they still may not want to do it, at least it is something that is more fun and slightly less traditional than regular homework.

I remember the 5x each, too. And sadly, as a first grade teacher, I assigned this to my students!

Thanks for sharing. I always look forward to reading your blog postings.
